Do you know how important it is to listen to your gut feelings? Some people call it intuition; some call it a sixth sense. Often, we don’t listen to it because our minds are so restless and noisy that the gentle voice of our intuition is often suppressed.

Do you know how important it is to listen to your gut feelings? Some people call it intuition; some call it a sixth sense. Practice listening to it. Often, we don’t listen to it because our minds are so restless and noisy that the gentle voice of our intuition is often suppressed. But when calmness prevails, this gentle voice of intuition will sound like the roar of a lion in the silent cave of your mind and cannot be suppressed, masked, or mistaken. Behold the power of intuition in the cave of calmness!

The following real-life story underscores the importance of listening to our intuition.

A few years ago, I was actively looking to purchase a house, and after six months, I spotted a beautiful house in one of the best neighborhoods in town. It was my dream house—the most perfect house that I had ever wanted in my life. The previous owners had built it in such a wonderful way that even if I had wanted to, I probably couldn’t have improved on the design. The house was full of character, the colors on the walls were uniquely special, and some of the doors had great artistic designs. On top of everything, there was ample sunlight and ventilation. The basement was finished and furnished. And there were many more features that my family and I really loved very much. The previous owners had maintained everything in perfect condition. Obviously, I was in love with this house, and I was fortunate to get a great deal on it. I negotiated the contract and applied for the home mortgage loan. I was assured of getting a loan from the bank.

A few weeks passed and things were moving along well. Four days before the closing date, the banker was giving me all kinds of excuses about how the loan couldn’t be processed for some strange reasons. Neither I nor my real estate agent with thirty years of experience could understand the logic behind the banker’s argument. We spoke with the manager, the vice president, and the president of the organization. All we got were apologies, excuses, and diplomatic answers, but not the truth. I was very upset for a few days and started looking for other banks from which I could get a loan. But they were charging higher interest rates. To make matters worse, the seller also became upset and very anxious and said he could not wait. So, I had to let go of this beautiful house of my dreams.

I could have renegotiated with the seller, gotten a loan from another bank, and somehow could have closed the deal. But I did not. I said to myself that maybe the universe for some reason does not want me to buy this house. Something within me told me to hold off on buying this house for now. Because of my past experiences where I had ignored my gut feeling and gotten into trouble, I decided to go with my gut feeling this time and not pursue buying this house, or any house, for the next six months at least.

Guess what happened? Five months later, the organization that I was working for got into a major financial crisis, and my income for that year went down significantly. If I had bought the house, ignoring my gut feeling, I would have been in deep financial trouble. In addition, there was a huge, unexpected shift in my family situation that forced me to move away and relocate to a different part of the country, thousands of miles away. If I had bought the house, I would have been forced to sell it and would have lost a lot of money as a result. Remaining calm proved to be my best asset. It helped me make an intelligent decision, guided by my intuition, that ended up being the best decision for my family.
